Venice Under Water

The thing that gets me most about these photos is that no one really seems that phased...

They don't seem phased because it happens EVERY year. This year it's deeper than many in the past, but Venice floods every year like clockwork. Even with the flood barriers they have, which are amazingly complicated.

My sister lived in Venice for many years and I've been there quite a few times, including the winter flooding. Those boards you see? They're up there every freaking winter and learning how to walk on them is quite the balancing act when everyone in the entire city is on them at the same time.

When it floods like that, the vaporetto tend not to run (water taxis) and so everyone is sloshing thru the water or walking the boards. It's an amazing city, but it does have it's issues. Including quite the stench in high summer!

Venice is such a city of romance. Too bad about the damp feet. I'm always surprised that there's not more illness there than there is. There must be a lot of footrot :-)

Catchya later

What cracks me up is that (like you said), nobody really seems to care.

I'm out in Los Angeles and jump to avoid stepping in a puddle (ok, maybe not that serious but you get what I mean. I think.). I'm not sure how I'd feel about walking in water that's nearly up to my knees.

When you live in a city that is literally sinking more each year, you learn to live with a little water.

It's the same in many countries that have monsoons. You expect flooding, it's just a fact of life. Like living alongside a river in the states. You know that at least every few years you're going to be flooded, if not every year. It's the price you pay for where you live

I agree that it blows my mind that they don't even seem phased. I had NO idea that happened regularly. Isn't the internet great? It really opens up the world.

I think the reality is, it's only water. Life goes on.
