Question

Sometimes, for whatever twisted reason, I look at other people's lives and they just seem more real than mine. More things happening.  More people smiling.  More life lived.

Of course, it's easy to stand on the outside and convince your mentally-deranged self that somehow they're managing to live more fully than you.

"The grass on the other side looks greener from a distance."
- Very wise quote from a tea bag that I've had pinned in my bulletin board for well over five years as a reminder not to be such an overly analytic weirdo

I have to admit that I've developed a bit of a lifestyle crush on one of my favorite bloggers, Joanna Goddard.  Not only does she have a quirky and very popular personal blog, but she blogs regularly for Glamour and Cookie, and is a freelance writer for some major magazines.  She lives in an adorable-looking apartment in the West Village and just seems like an overall sweet person.

Who embodies your idea of "the good life"?

What I've come to realize is that I'm very bad at guessing what someone's life is like from a small sample.

There are a few people who seem to have gotten themselves into situations that I'd like, and the best thing I can do is to talk to them to see whether or not I'm seeing clearly.

Oh look at me, commenting up a storm.

Julia Child. But not because she was an amazing cook. Because she got her start doing what she's famous for at 37. She partied before that and even when she got crazy focused, she focused on having a great time with people she adored.

Being able to do what you love and get paid for it. That is the good life. What makes it better? Bringing friends along for the ride.

My idea of the good life creating all the time - and surrounding myself with people who love to create and share as much as I do. I'm pretty close to living the good life.

Whenever I get to envying someone in an awesome situation like Ms. Goddard, my husband quickly brings me back to reality with his standard comment in these situations: "It's all smoke and mirrors." Yeah, he's a dream killer, although he would never admit it!

For reals m'girl. I am constantly asking my husband, 'are other people's lives this hard?' And I think they probably are---they just don't show it to you. But try keeping that in mind when the car has broken down for the umpteenth time and you can't even bring yourself to shower let alone leave the house...

I have a total girl crush on Jo too. Writing all day, finding cool stuff to get excited about, getting others excited about it too... Sounds pretty good to me!

Lately I've been reminding myself that I *AM* living my idea of the good life. I have a great relationship with my husband and 3 awesome kids. I am writing a novel and blogging about something I'm interested in. I still have more things that I want to see happen in my life, but I think the more we focus on the things that are the way we want them, then the more we will attract of the things we desire.

I often catch myself thinking about another person's life and hey it looks pretty green.

And then sometimes someone will say something to me about how amazing my life is... how do you fit it all in...

So maybe everyone else's life looks greener than their own?

I know there are lives out there greener than mine, but then again, there are many lives that aren't so green either.

My thinking is to do the best with what you have, talk and learn from the "greener" people, if indeed that is the case.

Make each day count..........:)

Never wish for anyone else's life.
You don't know what is really going on inside.

Yours (life) is a good one, and it is just beginning! The possibilities are ENDLESS.

How great is that?

i agree with your aunt! i, too, woudln't ultimately exchange my life with anyone else's. when times get tough, it's easy to wish it weren't happening or were happening more graciously and less painfully, but when i really look back into the things i've already come through, i know i went through them for a reason.

i have no doubt the end product of my life will be great... and i an confident it will be the same for you!

Right now, I think I want to keep my life. Generally when I want to exchange lives, it's with an actor...not for the fame part but because I think it would be really awesome to have acting skills and be able to put them to work. I've enjoyed the very little acting I've done.

But on the whole, I'd like to keep my life. My husband is great, my current job is good most of the time, I'm starting to make friends in the new area where we live...

A year ago, I would probably have had a list. All couples who'd been married longer than we had, seemed more settled, etc.
