Well lit

While wandering around Room and Board on Sunday I developed a little fetish with some very sleek, minimalist LED lamps. They give off a lot of light without taking up much room. Perfect for small-space living. And the lamp itself doesn't get hot at all!
The Link LED floor lamp comes in 2 sizes and a number of colors. The price is a hefty $420-440.
And my very favorite, the Pixo LED table lamp. It even has a USB port! I want to get this slender little bugger for Jared's desk, which doesn't have much room left but desperately needs some lighting. $190. Gulp.

The Apartment

I've been stalling from posting any apartment photos because....well, it's kind of awful.
Posting photos of your home for all the world (aka a couple of people who read your blog) to see.

Because there are always things you still want to do. Always things you wish you'd done differently. And things just never look as good in photos...especially amateur photos shot hastily while packing to evacuate to your parents house before Hurricane Irene.

But yes, if for nothing else, Hurricane Irene was the excellent motivation I needed to clean and tidy the entire apartment, and take the photos I've been meaning to take for ages (because there was a good chance a giant old tree or telephone pole would come crashing through our window and we would want to fondly remember our very first apartment, and - bonus! - have some proof for insurance companies!).

So, without further ado...
Right when you walk in the door.
Living "room" to the right, open to the kitchen.
Jared's desk, then dining area straight ahead.
Bathroom on the right, bedroom at the end.
The living area.
Might I discourage against a black rug in your main living space?
Unless you enjoy vacuuming up unimaginable amounts of visible kitty and Kathryn hair on a very regular basis.
Corner bookshelf in the living room.
Painting purchased in Curacao on honeymoon.
Sofa and Chair by Rowe.
Vintage ottoman, reupholstered, from Second Dibs.
View from the kitchen.
Who needs to go to the movie theater when you have THE TV?
Dining area.
Bathroom. Tiny, but newly-done and sunny.
Bedroom.
Duvet by Dwell Studio.
Very utilitarian stack o'drawers to hold the overflow of clothes from She-Who-Shops-Too-Much.
View from the bedroom window, aka perfect people-watching spot for constant stream of weddings (and funerals)
This wedding was taking place on Saturday morning, rushed before Hurricane Irene hit.

Home inspiration

How lovely.
So bright. Everything in just the right spot (particularly in that kitchen!)
So clean and somewhat sparse and completely inviting.

Organizing: Bathrooms

Our little apartment has 1 bathroom - one itty bitty bare necessities bathroom.
It's all new and nicely redone but, its small and we are severely lacking in storage space.
Sometimes I look around the place and panic a bit when I realize just how little storage there is, and just how much stuff I have....but. There are some really brilliant organizing ideas out there!
Attaching sheet metal to the back of a medicine cabinet to hang scissors and containers.
Attaching storage cups on the inside of a medicine cabinet door for upright items so they don't clutter your countertop.
Stylish cubbies to hold towels and medicine jars full of toiletries.
A vertical towel rack to make the most use of vertical space.
(because, as I'm learning, in small spaces it's ALL about the vertical space)

Desk

Desk is #1 on our To Do list for the apartment, since it will help control the clutter that is currently dominating.  I think this is a lot like what we need to do... simple desk. File cabinet. Shelves overhead to make the most use of vertical space.

Shelf

A very simple and yet completely attractive bathroom shelf.
It helps that its occupants are arranged by height...

Why this bathroom is cool

It is basically an identical setup to the tiny little bathroom in our apartment
(sub black vanity and dark green floor tiles)
Voila! Happy bathroom.
Love the bright colors and pretty details to perk up the blahness.
Literally the same layout as ours....
love the pretty vase.
Hanging pots IN THE SHOWER WINDOW.
Brilliant.
Did I mention identical layout? We have this same window. Perhaps it needs a plant...

Small Spaces

The time has cometh for serious small space design ideas in preparation for Operation Apartment.
Coming to a theater near you in Fall 2010.

I like how everything hangs over the counter to create an extra dimension of space.
Particularly those cute little ceramic jars.
